Cricket may be a gentleman’s game played with a bat and ball, but the game’s outcome is determined by several factors like cricket grounds other than the batters and bowlers’ actions. To put it another way, several factors such as weather, ground, pitch, and dew play a role in determining which team will win or lose. The most important determinant of the game, however, is the grounds.
Why Cricket Grounds Are So Important?
Whether it’s a live cricket match or fantasy cricket, the pitch condition is something that everyone thinks about. As we all know, fantasy sports are based on real-life sports, so to play fantasy cricket, one must first study the pitch thoroughly before deciding which player to select for his team. The nature of the ground’s surface has the greatest impact on the game. However, this is to make the game more enjoyable for the players. Nonetheless, some floors continue to be the bane of many players’ existence. Here’s a rundown of five of the world’s most lethal cricket pitches:
1. Saravanamuttu Stadium, Colombo
This is one of the most difficult stadiums to play in because the ground is so unpredictable. It happened during a warm-up match between India and Sri Lanka. The third day, in contrast to the first two days, when the game was normal, became a difficult day for the batsmen because the ball was bouncing very strangely.
Here’s what happened at the P. Saravanamuttu Stadium during the match against the Sri Lankan Board XI (also known as the Colombo Oval). The first two days of the game were uneventful, and the Sri Lankan Board XI amassed 326 runs before being bowled out. However, on the third day, the bounce became quite strange, and the ball rose almost to shoulder level even from a good distance! The match was then called off after just 0.2 overs on the third day, with the umpires claiming that the cricket ground at P. Saravanamuttu Stadium was unfit for play and dangerous.
2. WACA(Western Australia cricket association), Perth
This is another well-known cricket ground in which the ball is given an extra jump with each delivery. To score, the players must play out of their skin. Furthermore, whether you bat first or second on this cricket ground makes little difference. The source of the problem is thought to be the ground’s clay. An interstate match had to be called off earlier in 2000 because the cricket ground was deemed too dangerous to continue.
3. Sabina Park, Jamaica
The unevenness of the surface, which results in an inconsistent bounce, is what plagues this stadium. Furthermore, cracks in the ground make the stadium too dangerous to play in. However, pure ignorance caused the bottom to be in such a sorry state, as even the best cricket grounds could be ruined if the ground staff ignored them.
Due to the poor condition of the cricket ground during the 1998 Test match between the West Indies and England, many players were injured.
4. Feroz Shah Kotla, Delhi
Although the Feroz Shah Kotla ground in Delhi hosts and has hosted many matches, it is also one of the most controversial grounds in existence, as it has been deemed too dangerous to play on, and the hosts of criticism began in 2009. After the cricket ground was considered too dangerous for play, the fifth and final ODI of a series against Sri Lanka, which India had already won, was called off. The ICC issued a 12-month ban after the rise was classified unfit in the match referees report. This was a blot on the ground’s celebrated history, run by the DDCA and founded in 1883.
This was, however, the same ground where Anil Kumble thrashed the Pakistanis, becoming only the second bowler after Jim Laker to take ten wickets in Test innings. Despite this, it is still the most chastised venue.
5. Kingsmead, Durban
This is without a doubt South Africa’s fastest cricket ground and probably the second-fastest in the world after Perth… Even South Africa does not have a home advantage when they play here. Even military medium quicks (such as India) extract a lot of runs and cause problems for South Africa’s batting lineup.
